KUCHING (June 6): The proposed Senior Citizens Bill is on track to be tabled in Parliament during the fourth quarter of this year once the drafting process is completed, said Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said the Bill is currently in the data collection phase through a public survey aimed at gathering feedback and identifying key issues to be incorporated into the proposed legislation.
Nancy encouraged senior citizens, relevant stakeholders and members of the public to provide constructive feedback to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development on provisions they believe should be included in the Bill.
“However, we also need to study whether the proposals are appropriate,” she told reporters.
“We cannot simply accommodate the views of one individual. We have to consider the interests of the entire nation,” Nancy said when met after attending a community programme hosted by the Institut Sosial Malaysia (ISM) at Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Telaga Air here.
She said the survey would remain open until the ministry is ready to finalise and table the Bill.
“What is important is that the states are in agreement with the proposed legislation. If they feel there are still shortcomings, we welcome their feedback,” she said.
According to Nancy, the consultation process involves senior citizens, relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and state governments to ensure the Bill reflects the needs and concerns of all stakeholders.
On the ISM community programme, Nancy said the initiative meant to bring government services closer to the people through a more inclusive grassroots engagement approach.
“The programme also seeks to enhance social awareness, strengthen the spirit of volunteerism, and empower communities to become more resilient,” she added.
