With the arrival of the hot summer season, internal medicine specialist Tawfiq Al-Hamawi:

Drink plenty of fluids and be careful of reptiles and insects

    Al-Ahsa – Zuhair bin Jumah Al-Ghazal

Internal medicine specialist at Al Hammadi Hospitals in Riyadh, Tawfiq Al-Hamawi, said that with the onset of summer this year and the extreme rise in temperature, it is important to remember a number of measures that must be taken, including but not limited to, exposure to sunlight for a long period of time, as this may lead to heat shock, or what is known as heat stroke, and drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, especially in children and the elderly who have many chronic diseases.

    Wisdom saying

He pointed out the appearance of many reptiles and insects in the summer, which cause harm that may be serious to humans and may lead to death, including, for example, the appearance of snakes and reptiles such as scorpions, as the bite of a snake, as well as a scorpion, may lead to death if it is not treated as quickly as possible. Here it must be remembered that taking caution and preventing a snake or scorpion bite is the best, as the wisdom that says prevention is better than cure applies.

Pointing out the appearance of many small flying insects in various places, especially when cleanliness is not complete. These small insects move from one place to another and reach inside the house. They may bite humans, especially in exposed places: such as the face, neck, and upper and lower extremities. They may cause local redness with severe itching and then the appearance of skin blisters of various shapes and sizes.

Al-Hamwi went on to say: There are some insects, such as: mosquitoes, that may cause serious diseases such as: malaria, and there are other very dangerous insects, even if they are very small, whose bite in a person may lead to a dangerous situation that threatens the patient’s life, especially if the bite is in the face and neck area, as it leads to rapid swelling, shortness of the respiratory tract, and suffocation, if not treated as quickly as possible. There are also some insects whose bite may lead to painful diseases such as: severe high temperature with pain in the muscles and joints, along with General exhaustion and fatigue, accompanied by redness and local swelling in the lower or upper extremities. This requires hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics, in addition to other palliative treatments.

Al-Hamawi concluded his speech by saying: Some insects, which are known to be harmless, such as: ants, and some types of black flying ants sometimes pose a severe danger to humans, especially children, as the bite of such insects may lead to severe nervous shock, which leads to a severe drop in blood pressure, with an accelerated heartbeat and difficulty breathing, and may lead to death, God forbid. Hence, taking preventive measures is better than treatment and is safer.
