The new airport in Qaqortoq has fueled interest in investing in tourism. A new hotel with both standard and luxury rooms is on the way. It is on the drawing board and thus in an early phase.
– Together with my two sons Minik and Nikki, I would like to invest in a hotel with 100 rooms.
– The project has been underway for several years. Initially, we considered a project with cabins. Now we have a new hotel on the drawing board instead, says Pitsi Høegh to Sermitsiaq.
It’s an old dream, Pitsi Høegh, who is director and co-owner of the tourism company Greenland Sagalands in Qaqortoq, is aiming to realize it close to the airport at South Greenland’s largest city.
That is where the Høegh family hopes to place the hotel, says Pitsi Høegh.
She says that there are parts of the hotel that are more exclusive than the rest of the hotel.
– Most of the rooms, the standard rooms, will be around 20 square metres, while the luxury rooms will be slightly larger.
– From one half of the rooms the guests will have a view out to the fjord, while from the other half the rooms have a view of the mountains, says Pitsi Høegh.
The hotel that she, Minik and Nikki Høegh have on the drawing board is to be located on an area that the Municipality of Kujalleq has designated for business purposes, midway along the seven kilometer long road between the city and the new airport. The next step will be to get the budget for the hotel project in place.
– We are investigating the possibilities of getting investors, says Pitsi Høegh.
Thursday 16 April 2026 was a historic day in Greenland. Here, Qaqortoq Airport was put into use. As mentioned, the new airport has fueled interest in investing more in tourism in Qaqortoq.
– With the new hotel, we are betting on nature and culture tourists, but also conferences. Our target group is guests who come here for experiences. At the same time, we also focus on families, she says.
Expect growth in tourism
The Høegh family has not yet applied to the Municipality of Kujalleq for land allocation for the new hotel.

– We have received a municipal advance commitment on land allocation for the location of the hotel. In the autumn, we plan to apply for an area allocation.
– If we are lucky to get an area allocation in a good location, and get through with the project, I expect the hotel to be built in 2030, says Pitsi Høegh.
Tourism in South Greenland is developing, and is getting bigger, she states.
Her tourist company, Greenland Sagalands, today has two passenger boats with space for 10 and seven passengers respectively.
Together with her sons, she has just invested in and acquired a new boat with room for 12 passengers. It can also function as a cargo boat. The new boat will be owned by a company that the family is in the process of establishing.
– The whole city is open to getting more tourism as a source of income.
– After the opening of the new airport, I expect a growth in the influx of tourists who need overnight accommodation.
– Qaqortoq today only has Hotel Qaqortoq and several other accommodations. More accommodation is needed. Therefore, several new hotels are on the drawing board in addition to the hotel we have plans for, says Pitsi Høegh.
Topas Explorer Group bought Hotel Qaqortoq with 65 rooms from Jim Riis last year. The hotel was taken over on 1 January 2026.
As Sermitsiaq has previously told, Heidi Mortensen Møller, who runs the hostel Siniffik Inn, has plans for a hotel with 60 rooms.
