Iranian national team receives visa for United States
The biggest political issue in the run-up to the World Cup has been eliminated. The Iranian national team has now received the green light to enter the USA a few days before the start of the final tournament. The US Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, announced this on Friday at X.
“I am proud of our outstanding team at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara who processed the visas for the Iranian national team on their way to the World Cup in the United States,” he said, referring to a media report that the Iranian World Cup players received entry visas to the United States.
Three days earlier, the Iranians had already received their visas for Mexico. The team is currently in training camp in Turkey.
The tournament starts on Thursday next week. Iran is scheduled to play its first World Cup game on June 15 in the USA against New Zealand. As association president Mehdi Taj announced on Tuesday, a flight to Spain is planned for Saturday before continuing from there to the tournament headquarters in Tijuana in Mexico.
The team originally planned their camp in Tucson, Arizona, but this was then moved to Mexico. The three preliminary round games will take place in the USA.
The two countries have been at war since the United States and Israel began bombing Iran in late February.
