In a step that reflects the country’s trend towards developing advanced medical services, it was revealed Ministry of Health and Population About the details of expanding the service of therapeutic plasma exchange sessions (Plasmapheresis), using the latest automated separation techniques for blood components, which contributes to providing effective therapeutic solutions for a number of complex and chronic diseases.
A report by the Ministry of Health and Population said: This expansion comes within the framework of the Ministry’s strategy to improve the quality of health care, and provide the latest scientific findings in the fields of diagnosis and treatment, especially in subspecialties that require advanced technological equipment and medical personnel trained at the highest level.
Plasmapheresis sessions service
For his part, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health, explained that the plasma exchange technology depends on separating the plasma from the patient’s blood, which is the part that contains antibodies and harmful pathogens, then replacing it with healthy plasma or safe medical solutions, before pumping the blood cells back into the body. He stressed that this process is carried out with high precision using automated separation devices, which enhances the efficiency of treatment and reduces possible complications.
Abdel Ghaffar pointed out that this service is radically different from dialysis, as it aims to remove specific pathological components from the blood, and not to get rid of toxins resulting from kidney failure. This technology is used to treat a wide range of diseases, most notably autoimmune diseases and complex neurological conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and myasthenia gravis, in addition to chronic inflammatory neuropathy and severe relapsing cases of multiple sclerosis.
Treatment of blood and immune diseases
He continued: The therapeutic uses include blood and immune diseases, such as thrombocytopenic purpura, hemolytic uremic syndrome, and Goodpasture syndrome, in addition to diseases such as lupus erythematosus, and rapidly progressing glomerulonephritis, which makes it a vital tool in dealing with critical and complex cases. He stressed that this service is provided within the system of state expenses and health insurance, without placing any financial burden on patients, within the framework of the state’s keenness to achieve health justice and provide advanced treatment for all groups.
According to Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the actual operation of the service began in August 2025 in a number of hospitals in Cairo and Giza governorates, including Zayed Al Nahyan, Al Salam Specialist, Fatimiyah Cairo, May 15, and Zayed Specialist hospitals. He said: The current year is scheduled to witness an additional expansion that includes other hospitals in a number of governorates, including Manshiet Al-Bakri, Ain Shams, Boulak Al-Dakrur, and Imbaba, in addition to hospitals in Qalyubia, Gharbia, Dakahlia, and Kafr El-Sheikh.
This expansion reflects the country’s commitment to providing advanced health services in accordance with the latest international standards, which contributes to improving treatment results, reducing hospital stays, and raising the quality of life of patients, especially in cases that represented a major challenge in the past.
