PÚBLICO became part of an Iberian consortium to combat disinformation within the scope of the Ibercheck project, which began in January 2026, and which aims to reinforce Iberian collaboration in the monitoring and dissemination of fact-checking content. Co-financed by the European Union, the Ibercheck is being developed by several media outlets integrating, in addition to PÚBLICO, three Spanish news media – the newspaper online of fact-checking Newtralwhich leads the consortium, the television channel laSexta and the radio Onda Cero – and the technology company Inar.IA.
One of the key points of this partnership is cross-border collaboration, both in sharing content and knowledge around the topic of disinformation, and in developing journalistic research work at an Iberian level.
In parallel, Ibercheck aims to reinforce the coverage of disinformation in the PUBLIC, as well as expanding the reach of verified information, seeking to reach audiences traditionally less exposed to this type of content, through the diversification of formats and distribution channels.
In this context, Ibercheck will involve collaboration with newspapers and websites local news, as well as regional radio stations, with a view to covering the entire territory of mainland Portugal. On the other hand, new formats will also be tested in the social media environment online and a new feature in website in the PUBLIC.
Complementing this approach, the project also involves a media literacy aspect – and, in particular, on disinformation and fact checking –, with a calendar of educational actions supported by the initiative PUBLIC at School. The purpose of expanding the range of target audiences also applies here, adding teachers and students, with whom PÚBLICO na Escola regularly contacts, to a broad group of communication professionals – which includes journalists from other media, journalism students, public relations technicians and digital influencers.
Ibercheck can be monitored daily in the section’s work Proof of Facts or in project page.
