The European Parliament Committee has approved the regulations regarding the implementation of the EU-US trade agreement. The news was announced by Bernd Lange, Chairman of the Parliament’s International Trade Committee, adding that it is expected to pass a plenary vote in the EP on June 16.
Negotiations on the trade agreement between the EU and the US were concluded in July 2025 at the Turnberry golf course in Scotland, owned by US President Donald Trump. Under the agreement, EU countries agreed not to impose tariffs on US products, while the US will impose a 15 percent tariff on EU products.
The inability of the EU to complete the ratification process of the agreement caused the reaction of the US. On May 1, Trump announced that tariffs on cars and trucks from the EU would rise to 25 percent due to the EU’s failure to meet the trade deal.
Giving the EU until July 4 to fulfill its obligations under the trade deal, Trump said that otherwise tariffs would rise to even higher levels.
While most EU countries wanted the agreement to be approved and put into effect quickly after Trump’s threat, MEPs asked that various safeguard clauses be added to the text, which would come into force immediately if the US side violated the agreement.
After long negotiations, the EU institutions reached a consensus on a common text.
