Thirty individuals have embarked on a comprehensive tour guide training initiative designed to elevate the quality of service within Dominica’s tourism industry.
The fully sponsored program is being delivered by the Discover Dominica Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and Dominica State College, as per a Discover Dominica Authority press release.
Scheduled to run from April 13 to 21, 2026, the training is financed by the Caribbean Development Bank through its Eastern Caribbean Sustainable Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems (EC-STEMS) Project. The release shared that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the capacity and professionalism of the country’s tourism workforce.
Participants are being prepared for certification under the Nature Island Standards of Excellence (NISE), with the program serving as a key requirement for that designation. The curriculum focuses on essential areas such as cultural interpretation, environmental responsibility, customer relations, and safety practices—core components for delivering enriching and secure visitor experiences.
Blending theoretical instruction with hands-on fieldwork, the training allows participants to put their knowledge into practice in real-life settings.
This practical approach is intended to ensure that graduates are well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of both visitors and the tourism sector.
“Consistent service standards are critical as we continue to grow and position Dominica in a competitive tourism market,” remarked Marva Williams, CEO and Director of Tourism at the Discover Dominica Authority. “Programs like this ensure that the people delivering the experience are prepared, confident and aligned with the level of quality we expect across the sector.”
According to officials, at the conclusion of the program, participants will be positioned to pursue NISE certification, contributing to a more consistent and high-quality tourism product across Dominica.
