Last year, 26% of the electricity consumed in Luxembourg was also produced inside the country, up from just 16% of consumption being covered by national renewable production in 2020. The figures were unveiled by the Luxembourg Regulatory Institute (ILR) on Tuesday. Despite electromobility and the rollout of heat pumps, electricity consumption rose by almost 3% in a single year, since residential customers contribute far less to national consumption than industry.
Photovoltaics ahead of wind turbines
In 2025, for the first time, more renewable electricity was generated by photovoltaics than by wind turbines. Self-consumption is rising along with it, with more and more people and companies that produce electricity now using it themselves rather than feeding it into the grid.
The all-in price for end users, covering electricity, network charges and taxes, has climbed by more than 30% in the space of a year. The jump is down to the expiry of the price cap introduced in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Gas, too, has become almost 11% more expensive over the past year as a result.
