In Sermersooq Circuit Court a young man in a black shirt sits chewing gum. He sits calmly as he listens to a series of accusations leveled against him.
The man, who recently turned 19, is accused of so many illegalities in total that the circuit court set aside five days to review all the circumstances.
Monday is the third day, and from the start we get an important piece of information: The prosecutor says that the prosecution wants the young defendant sentenced to custody.
Detention is the law’s strictest measure, which is given for an indefinite period to particularly dangerous criminals. But it is too far-reaching a measure in this case, the defender believes.
The most serious charge against the man is double attempted murder on June 27, 2025. According to the indictment, he tried to kill two women in a car with two shots at close range in a parking lot in Nuussuaq.
They suffered injuries to the face, chest and arms, but quickly received medical treatment. The indictment also mentions an unknown accomplice.
The defendant pleads not guilty to attempted murder. He admits to having fired a shotgun, but it was done to scare and not to kill, he said during questioning last week.
The defense also disputes the prosecutor’s claim that the shots fell within five meters of the women, and believes that the young man was significantly further away.
Pleads not guilty to stabbing
Another serious matter concerns an assault with a knife or machete in another car park.
According to the indictment, it happened on 31 August 2024 in front of the bar Daddy’s in Nuuk. Here a man was stabbed in the groin. In that regard, the 19-year-old is only charged with violence and not attempted murder. He still pleads not guilty.
Prosecutors will show video recordings of incidents in front of the pub on Wednesday morning. The relevant people are far from the surveillance camera, so it is a bit difficult to follow. Those present in court go up to the flat screen to see as best as possible.
In addition to shooting and stabbing, there are a large number of other charges in the indictment, such as possession of hashish, car theft, vandalism, violation of public authority, burglary of a restaurant in Nuuk and further cases of violence. Several of these matters have already been acknowledged by the defendant, and some incidents date back several years.
