A fight that occurred during visiting hours in sector 11 of the Preventive Center for Men in zone 18 left a deceased prisoner and an injured teenager by firearm on June 7.
The fatal victim was identified as Mauricio Ernesto Gaytán Martínez, 32 years old, who had been in prison since November 8, 2018 and was facing legal proceedings for attacks with specific aggravations, conspiracy, concealment and illicit associations, according to the database of the Penitentiary System (SP).
According to the report from the National Civil Police (PNC), the fight occurred in the visiting area of sector 11, where members of the Barrio 18 gang are being held.
He added that Gaytán Martínez, an alleged member of that gang, was transferred at 1:55 p.m. to the Roosevelt Hospital by the Municipal Firefighters. The report details that he had stab wounds to the skull and abdomen, in addition to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The PNC reported as a preliminary version that the incident may have originated during an argument between Gaytán Martínez and a 17-year-old teenager who was visiting the prison. The teenager also suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to a private hospital.
The Roosevelt Hospital reported that Gaytán Martínez died upon entering the emergency room of the healthcare center due to the severity of his injuries.
The SP ruled out that it was a mutiny inside that prison and stated that, after the incident, two prisoners were placed at the disposal of the authorities.
“The Elite Force and the control bodies of the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System identified and placed at the disposal of the authorities two prisoners involved in an armed incident that occurred today in the Preventive Detention Center for Men in zone 18,” the institution indicated in a statement.
The SP added that, after the incident, security protocols were activated to restore order in the center and a search was carried out in which two firearms were located.
Relatives of the injured teenager indicated that the visitors were eating food when a power outage occurred and, subsequently, several gunshots were heard.
