Today, June 9, 2026, Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan celebrate the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Over the past decades, bilateral ties have steadily developed in the political, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres. Relations between the two countries are based on a shared history, linguistic affinity, and the ethnic and cultural ties of the two peoples, and the strategic partnership is developing with the political will of the leaders of both countries.
On June 5, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Azerbaijani Minister of Culture Adil Kerimli, who arrived for celebrations on the occasion of the Days of Azerbaijani Culture in Turkmenistan. The opening ceremony took place at the Palace of Mukams of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat. The program of events continued in the town of Arkadag, where a scholarly conference on the works of classical poets from both countries, a photo exhibition, and a joint concert featuring the Galkynysh equestrian group took place.
The construction of a mosque in the Azerbaijani city of Fuzuli has become an important symbol of fraternal relations. The initiative to build it as a gift to Azerbaijan was put forward by the National Leader of the Turkmen People, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council), Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, during his visit to Azerbaijan. On October 7, 2025, in Gabala, President Ilham Aliyev, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and other heads of state participating in the 12th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States laid the foundation stone for a mosque online. The complex will cover more than one hectare. The structure will feature two 40-meter-tall minarets, a main dome up to 30 meters high, and will be designed to accommodate 500 worshippers at a time.
The diplomatic missions of the two countries are headed by: the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Ashgabat – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Gismet Gozalov, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Baku – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Gurbanmammet Elyasov.
