Is there a holiday coming after the Paraguay vs. clash? Germany? President Santiago Peña opened the door to a national decree if the team advances to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
This afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., the Paraguayan team faces Germany with its sights set on qualifying for the round of 16 of the World Cup 2026. Beyond the sporting euphoria, a question hovers over the political and social environment: will President Santiago Peña decree a national holiday if Albirroja achieves the feat?
Although initially the president had ruled out granting a day off after qualifying for the round of 32, the speech changed due to the magnitude of the next challenge. Peña assured that, if the World Cup path continues, the possibility of issuing a holiday decree “is without a doubt” on the table.
From the General Directorate of Presidential Informationthe posture is one of caution, but without closing the doors.
Guillermo Grance, spokesperson for the sector, indicated that the President will analyze the scenario after the final whistle. “The President He mentioned that he was going to analyze. I would not say high (the probability), but that possibility does exist, from what the President said,” he explained.

The Executive Branch has the legal framework necessary to materialize this measure.
According to the Law No. 7,544the President is empowered to decree up to three additional holidays a year for tourism reasons, celebrations or events of special relevance to the nation.
It is important to remember that the president has already used this tool on previous occasions. In 2025, the Executive decreed holidays on September 5after confirmation of the ticket to the World Cup, and the December 26seeking to promote tourism and family unity during the end-of-year holidays.
If the victory against the German team is consummated, the Government must evaluate whether the emotional and social impact of the victory justifies add a new holiday to the calendara scenario that keeps an entire country in suspense.
