British tennis player Emma Răducanu (37 WTA) was defeated by the Argentinian Solana Sierra (64 WTA), 6-0, 7-6 (7/4), on Sunday, Paris, in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros.
Răducanu suffered her second setback in a week, after France’s Diane Parry defeated her in the first round in Strasbourg, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).
For the player of Romanian origin, it was her third participation in the French Open, but for the first time she lost on her debut.
A former winner and two former finalists also left the Paris tournament prematurely.
Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 champion, was beaten by American Hailey Baptiste, 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (8/6), 6-2. American Sloane Stephens, defeated by Simona Halep in the 2019 final, she was eliminated without the right to appeal by Czech Sara Bejlek, 6-3, 6-2. Another American, 2020 finalist Sofia Kenin, was defeated by compatriot Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-3.
