The Swedish Transport Agency gives Qaqortoq Airport permission to handle international air traffic after a safety review.
South Greenland’s new airport opened on 16 April, but was initially only approved for Air Greenland’s aircraft.
Now, after its inspection, the Danish Transport Agency reports that Qaqortoq Airport is ready for international flights.
– We have reviewed the security at Qaqortoq Airport and can ascertain that Greenland Airports now has sufficient operating experience and the necessary security procedures in place to also be able to handle international flights from, for example, Icelandair, says Lars Korsholm, deputy director of the Swedish Transport Agency.
– This applies both in the security check and out on the field, where equipment and security procedures meet the security requirements, says Lars Korsholm.
With the new approval, Icelandair can start flying between Qaqortoq and Keflavik from today, Thursday 4 June. An earlier departure on June 2 was cancelled, according to Flightradar24.
Icelandair announced last year that it would fly four times a week in the summer months, twice a week in September.
The company previously flew to Narsarsuaq Airport, which was closed to flights after the opening of the new airport in Qaqortoq.
