The results of recent parliamentary elections they mark one of the most interesting ideological realignments, they show a deeper shift in society and not just a partisan redistribution. It forms a new political scene that is based more on ideological convergence and less on contemporary cooperation. The election result highlights a clear trend of a significant part of society towards choices linked to political stability, accountability in governance and ensuring the country’s economic and national security, and away from polarization, nihilism and unrestrained confrontation.
The turn of the parties DISY and DIKOin the last weeks of the pre-election period, in the emergence of similar political priorities based on center-right ideology and social liberalism and the oppositional silence of the DISY, had created a climate of taxation and perspective for the place that in the final analysis was capitalized on their gatherings. The percentage of DISY is indicative, which despite the introversion and the wounds of the 2023 Presidential elections managed to win the vote of those who voted for Averov on the first Sunday and those who they voted for Christodoulidis from the first or second Sunday. The strengthening of DISY and DIKO is a success of their presidents, but above all it is a positive development for the political life of the country for a strong, politically empowered, modern and reliable Cyprus.
At the center of their pre-election campaign was the strengthening of the country’s credibility abroad and the confirmation of its European and Western orientation, the protection of security and defense and the need to maintain a strong economy, for greater social cohesion, which will improve the everyday life of the citizen and with more opportunities for its young people. Policies strongly supported by the parties of the center-right ideology and the Christodoulidis Government and acted as a unifying axis addressed to voters who seek political continuity, institutional seriousness and avoidance of experimentation in a period of international and regional challenges.
The emergence of responsibility as a dominant political message was not accidental. The geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, immigration pressures, energy policy and the need for economic resilience reinforced the desire for a stable political framework. Within this environment, the DISY and DIKO cooperation message can be interpreted as an attempt to form a broader center-right pole that will function as a force of institutional stability and European orientation.
At the same time, the emphasis on the economy and reforms, tax reform, strengthening competitiveness and maintaining fiscal discipline were presented as conditions for maintaining social cohesion and highlighted the policies of a reliable government.
In the field of foreign policy and defence, the common approach focused on strengthening Cyprus’ relations with the European Union, Western alliances and regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The defense of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, the need to strengthen the deterrent power and the maintenance of the country’s international credibility were also key elements of the political rhetoric.
The election result, therefore, reflects not only party affiliations, but also a deeper political trend: the formation of a centre-right narrative based on the notions of stability, responsibility and the European direction of Cyprus. The dynamics of such cooperation can decisively influence future political developments, redefining the balances in the Cypriot political system and creating a strong ideological axis in the center and center-right of the political spectrum.
The criticality of the moment requires political decisions based on ideological consistency and a common vision for the future of Cyprus. Whether through participation in governance or through a truly responsible and creative attitude, the challenge for the center-right space is to contribute to the formation of a stable political environment that will offer perspective, trust and hope to citizens.
The choice between participating in governance and exercising constructive opposition is not only a political strategy, but also a message to society about how a party perceives its role and responsibilities towards the country and its citizens. Especially when it comes to parties that operate in the same ideological space and share basic political principles, each choice acquires a separate political and symbolic weight.
Participation in governance mainly sends a message of responsibility, stability and a willingness to co-shape policies, while the choice of constructive opposition conveys a complex message, which when exercised against policies coming from the same ideological space, may create contradictory messages to the voters.
The dominant election message and demand is the prospect of cooperation between the political forces operating in the center and the center-right and the formation of a wider political majority with a common vision for the country. A vision that will be based on stability, reforms, economic development, security and the exploitation of the opportunities offered by Cyprus’s participation in the European Union.
