Guatemala closed its performance in the 36th edition of the Championship Central American Athletics Major, held in Managua, Nicaragua, with an outstanding harvest of 13 medals: seven gold, four silver and two bronze.
Guatemalan athletes are in the final stretch of their preparation heading to the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, which will begin on July 24. Among the figures of Saturday and Sunday, Thelma Fuentes stood out, who won the gold medal in triple jump with a mark of 12.68 meters, followed by the also Guatemalan Danisha Chimilio Ávila, who won the silver with a mark of 12.32 meters.
Fuentes arrived at the competition after winning the bronze medal at the Lima 2026 Ibero-American Senior Athletics Championship, in the triple jump event, where he reached a mark of 13.17 meters.
The performance of Mariandreé Chacón also stood out, who won gold in the 100 and 200 meters flat. In the first distance he won with a time of 11.66 seconds and in the second he took the title by registering 23.85 seconds. Now, the Zacapaneca runner will focus her preparation on her participation in Santo Domingo 2026.
At the end of May, Chacón improved the national records of the 100 and 200 meter dash during a competition in the United States. In the 100 meters he recorded a time of 11.51 seconds, while in the 200 meters set a new national record of 23.44 seconds.
The other golds were conquered by Heidy Alicia Villegas Marroquín in the 10,000 meter dash (34:39.72), Marcos Renaldo Cruz Pérez in the 3,000 meter hurdles (9:08.78), Sandra Raxón in the 5,000 meters (16:59.96) and Billy López in hammer throw (34.03). In addition, López added a bronze medal in discus throwing.
The silver medals came from Danisha Chimilio Ávila in the triple jump (12.32 m), Leonel Eugenio Rivas in the javelin throw (58.35 m), Franklin Álvarez in the 10,000 meter dash (31:58.18) and the 5,000 meter dash (15:06.24), as well as Denceel Álvarez in the high jump (1.96 m).
