The president Lula (PT) said this Tuesday (14) that he will be a candidate for re-election, after his speech was interpreted mainly by the financial market as a sign that he might not run for a new term.
Lula said it is a “moral, ethical and even Christian commitment not to allow fascists to govern again.” He refers to the senator’s growth Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and pre-candidate for president of the Republic, in the electoral polls.
This Tuesday’s statements were made in an interview with the websites Brasil 247, DCM and Revista Fórum. The speech that raised speculation about his withdrawal was given last week, in an interview with ICL Notícias.
“I’m saying that I haven’t decided to be a candidate yet, but the fact is that there will be a convention in the middle of June and I will have to present a program, something new for this country. Something so that we don’t just say ‘one term comes in, ends hunger, leaves, comes back and hunger is back again'”, declared the PT member last week.
In the same interview, Lula admitted that he would hardly be left out. In 2022, during the pre-campaign of the current term, the PT member adopted the same speech of uncertainty – but everyone in the political world knew that he would be a candidate.
This Tuesday, the head of government stated: “That’s why I’m a candidate, I have a lot to do in this country.” He said he never had so much energy to govern. “My fourth term is for a decisive leap,” he declared.
Lula also stated that the financial market will always prefer another candidate in his place. The president said that the major players in the economy do not want social inclusion policies, but only for the government to guarantee the payment of interest.
Furthermore, the president said he had a conversation with a Globo manager about an infographic shown by GloboNews that linked the owner of the former Master Bank, Daniel Vorcarohim and PT. The broadcaster recanted and apologized days after publishing the material.
“I had a conversation with a Globo leader. I had a conversation to show the irresponsibility of that PowerPoint”, declared the PT member.
“Trying to show a guy’s connection with the President of the Republic, with the Central Bank. And even putting up the PT flag. As I’ve been a victim many times, I had a very serious conversation. We can’t admit this kind of bullshit anymore,” said the President of the Republic.
“They said it was someone who did it and was sent away. Who paid the price? A little bit of money,” said Lula.
Vorcaro and Banco Master are protagonists of a financial scandal that has affected the image of politicians and the STF (Federal Supreme Court).
The mention of PowerPoint can be understood as a reference to Lava Jato. The then prosecutor of the operation Deltan Dallagnol used the software to make a presentation that linked Lula to several points of the corruption scandal, in 2016.
Years later, Dallagnol was ordered to pay compensation for moral damages to Lula. The former prosecutor was elected federal deputy in 2022, with the highest vote in Paraná. Had the mandate revoked still in the first half of 2023.
