Montego Bay United (MBU) hit Spanish Town Police FC for six to make an emphatic statement in their Jamaica Premier League game yesterday at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay.
MBU’s Lucas Lima opened the scoring in the 15th minute to give the league leaders a positive start and Brian Brown scored from penalty spot to double the lead in the 31st minute. Deonjay Brown powered home the third (44th minute) to give the winners a comfortable lead at half-time.
Brown was on target again in the 49th minute to complete his brace before Kegan Caull got the fifth in the 68th minute. MBU would add another, five minutes from full time, through Jahmari Clarke to seal the win.
With the win MBU maintained their grip on top spot in the league with 65 points. Mount Pleasant, who lost 1-0 to Tivoli Gardens, remain second on 57. Racing United (55) are third despite losing 1-0 to Waterhouse. Portmore United (also 55 points) are fourth with an inferior goal difference after a 1-0 win over Molynes United.
Xavier Gilbert, the MBU head coach, highlighted their success in reaching the play-offs and their bid to end the preliminary round among the top two.
“The first hurdle is to make it to the play-offs; that is a good thing. We still have another objective in terms of finishing at the top so we can get a little break, and we’re still on course for that,” said Gilbert.
“Today’s game, I thought we made it easy. We did some good things, and scoring early kind of pushed them back a bit and then let us manage proceedings from there on,” added Gilbert.
Meanwhile, Wolry Wolf, Spanish Town Police FC’s coach, attributed the big defeat to a lack of discipline and failure to follow instructions.
“I think it was a half-hearted performance today. Montego Bay wanted it more than us today, and it showed in the result. We were very indisciplined and didn’t follow simple instructions,” said Wolf.
“I want to also add that we played without three players from the starting team that won the back-to-back games. Hopefully, going forward we can have those three to strengthen the squad,” added Wolf.
