Former West Indies Under-19 captain Ackeem Auguste fell just short of triple figures on the opening weekend of the West Indies Championship. In his first big match since a medical procedure earlier this year, the classy left-handed batter hit an elegant 95 off 177 balls for the Windward Islands against Guyana.
Sent in to bat, the Islanders ended 286 all out at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda, on Sunday, April 13, the first day of the four-day fixture. Auguste, 22, crafted a 79-run partnership with Kavem Hodge and a 61-run union with captain Sunil Ambris that had them at 148-3.
Auguste spent four and a half hours at the crease, hitting 12 fours. He noted that Guyana’s plan seemed to be bowling wide to him, which forced him to be patient and adjust his approach to the innings.
“The wicket was a little difficult,” said Auguste. “At the start, it was a bit tacky, so I was unable to hit through the line of the ball. So it kind of forced me to change my batting plan, and wait until the bowlers came a little closer for me to take it off. Then when the spinners came on, I was able to score a bit more freely, and I capitalised on that.”
Ryan John added 42 runs down the order. Auguste and John both fell to left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who took six wickets for the defending champions. Shadrack Descarte made 15, and wicketkeeper Noelle Leo recorded a duck.
Guyana scored two runs in a single over before the close of play, trailing by 284 runs with all 10 wickets in hand.
