Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said today that it is an alarm signal that some officials, including US President Donald Trump, look at NATO and US-European relations differently, but also that the policy of a country cannot be based on succumbing to the whims, even of the most powerful, nor on “self-deception or flattery”.
“Conflicts in NATO are the last thing we need. Lately, we see that NATO is being challenged, the question is whether we need it or not. There are attempts to break up or weaken the European Union as well. For me, the Western community, I’m not talking about geography but about the value system, deserves to be maintained at all costs,” said Tusk, before leaving for Armenia for the Summit of the European Political Community (EPC).
He emphasized that Poland’s position and interest must be clear – that it wants an integrated Europe, an integrated and efficient NATO and the greatest possible solidarity, including military, with the USA, Canada and Europe.
“We should not give in to provocations, the political whims of this or that world leader. We should defend those relations very consistently. An additional alarm signal is that some politicians, among them (US) President Donald Trump, have a different approach than the previous, traditional one, which gave us all guarantees and a sense of security,” Tusk told Polish journalists in Warsaw.
He said that in Washington, Paris or Berlin, it should be persistently repeated that NATO and a united Europe with mutual respect and predictability are the phenomenon that gives the West today the chance to defend its world and that has guaranteed its security until now.
“Politics cannot be based on self-deception, on flattering even the most powerful leaders of the world. You should express your position in a cordial, friendly manner,” said Tusk.
