A Catholic not-for-profit hospital in Singapore expands its surgical and critical care capacity with the opening of a new day surgery centre and upgraded intensive care facilities.

Mount Alvernia Hospital inaugurated the new facilities at its Thomson Road campus in April, enhancing its ability to deliver same-day procedures and treat critically ill patients, according to a report by Catholic News SG, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Singapore.
The new day surgery center supports ophthalmology and other same-day procedures. It includes four operating theatres to be opened in phases based on patient demand, a five-bed recovery area, and a 16-bed day ward.
The recovery area is located next to the operating theatres to minimize patient movement and allow closer post-operative monitoring.
The hospital’s upgraded Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit now form a 16-room critical care unit, doubling capacity from eight beds.
The unit is designed for patients requiring close monitoring, including those with acute respiratory failure, multiple organ failure, severe neurological emergencies, and high-risk post-operative conditions.
It includes two negative-pressure isolation rooms for patients with airborne infectious diseases, designed to contain airflow and reduce transmission risks.
Each room is equipped for bedside procedures, allowing treatment without transferring critically ill patients, while centralized systems enable real-time monitoring.
Founded in 1961 by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood, Mount Alvernia Hospital is the only not-for-profit general acute tertiary care private hospital in Singapore, with 353 beds supported by hundreds of specialists and accredited doctors.
The hospital integrates clinical pastoral care into its services as part of its approach to holistic treatment for patients and families, regardless of background or belief.
As a not-for-profit institution, it channels its surpluses into facility improvements, support for Assisi Hospice, and outreach programs for underserved communities.
The opening ceremony, which coincided with the hospital’s 65th anniversary, was attended by Singapore Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, along with hospital officials and representatives of the founding congregation.
