Limassol: Musical instruments worth €63,000 were stolen

Research is in full swing by Municipality of Limassol about the musical instruments of the former Philharmonic of the Mesa Geitonia Municipality, which seem to have disappeared. The issue was identified in the previous period, when it was found that some of the philharmonic instruments, which belong to the Municipality, are missing without any official information as to where they have ended up.

As philenews is informed, the Mayor of Limassol, Yannis Armevtisrequested a record and an internal investigation, with the aim of identifying the reasons for the loss. The initial inventory of the musical instruments revealed that two instruments appear to be missing, necessitating further investigation as the number of lost instruments appears to have been much higher.

According to information, the request to record the musical instruments of the former Philharmonic of the Municipality of Mesa Geitonia was assigned to the coordinator of the musical schemes of the Municipality of Limassol, who was appointed to the position at the beginning of the year. As mentioned by the Mayor, Yiannis Armeutis, when asked to take a position on the issue at filenews, he asked the coordinator to proceed with a more detailed analysis of the situation.

At the same time, he pointed out that since last Friday, an investigation is being conducted to determine if there are previous decisions of the Municipal Council regarding the alienation or donation of musical instruments. The audit is done in an attempt to identify if the instruments were somehow given away or if there were other processes that would justify their loss. Also, the Mayor informed the Municipal Council about the first findings of the investigation.

At first sight, from the list that had been drawn up, it seems that about 20 musical instruments, which are particularly expensive, are missing. Also, some of the musical instruments do not seem to match the count’s description, while some are missing and others are non-functional or damaged. Indicatively, a saxophone can cost up to €8,000, while the total value of the musical instruments allegedly missing reaches €63,000. If the loss is confirmed, the authorities of the Municipality of Limassol do not rule out submitting a complaint to the Police to investigate the matter.

Asked to comment on the issue, the former Mayor of Mesa Geitonia, Doros Antoniou, stated that a count was made before the reform of the Local Government and as he noted, no deficit was found.

The Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Mesa Geitonia, Marios Protopapas, was also placed on this specific issue, stating that he had denounced the issue with the musical instruments since the fall of 2024, while pointing out that the same is happening with the uniforms of the Philharmonic, which have not been delivered to date.
