Ministers to Be Sworn In Tuesday at AUA Following ABLP Election Victory
The swearing-in of government ministers will take place on Tuesday at the American University of Antigua (AUA), as the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) moves to complete the formation of its new administration following a decisive general election victory.
The announcement was made during Friday’s ceremony at Government House, where Prime Minister Gaston Browne was sworn in for a fourth consecutive term alongside Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin.
Thursday’s general election delivered a commanding mandate for the ABLP, which secured 15 of the 17 parliamentary seats, extending the party’s hold on government beyond a decade and cementing Browne’s position as the country’s longest-serving modern political leader.
The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) was reduced to a single seat in Parliament, while the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) retained its seat on the sister island.
The upcoming swearing-in of ministers is expected to formalise the Cabinet that will guide the government’s next term, following what has been described as one of the most decisive election outcomes in Antigua and Barbuda’s recent history.
During Friday’s ceremony, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams highlighted the significance of the result, describing it as a historic mandate and warning that high expectations now accompany the landslide victory.
Browne, in his own remarks, pledged to “work harder” and govern with accountability, unity and a focus on improving living standards.
With the Cabinet yet to be announced, attention is now turning to the composition of the government’s executive team and the policy direction for the new term.
Tuesday’s ceremony at AUA will mark the final step in the transition from election victory to full governance, as ministers are formally appointed to their respective portfolios.
