A year later, on May 1, 2027, checked baggage will be upgraded: Economy fares will then include 23 kilograms instead of the previous 20, in Premium Economy the limit per suitcase will increase from 25 to 32 kilograms, and in Business Class it will be expanded to two pieces of luggage weighing 32 kilograms each, up from 2 suitcases weighing 30 kilograms each. In the future, the rules will apply to all routes in the Condor route network, regardless of the route.
Strategy against Lufthansa
Previously, Condor passengers were faced with different baggage allowances depending on the holiday region, which caused confusion, especially when connecting with partner airlines. The new standards are based on internationally accepted dimensions and weights. The hand luggage size of 55 x 40 x 23 centimeters corresponds to what many network companies allow. The additional five centimeters in the bag create more air for the laptop. When it comes to checked baggage, Condor harmonizes economy at 23 kilograms, the de facto standard for many airline providers. Premium Economy’s jump to 32 kilograms is aimed at long-distance travelers with heavy luggage. In business class, Condor relies on the classic international level with twice the amount.
The news comes shortly after Lufthansa announced that it would be introducing a new basic fare that will undercut the previous light fare from mid-May in terms of baggage allowance: only one personal item is included, such as a laptop bag or a small backpack. The mini trolley, popular with day and weekend travelers, is no longer part of the package and, like checked or additional hand luggage, must be booked for an additional charge. Lufthansa speaks of a “clear, comprehensible selection” that is based on customer needs.
In a direct comparison, both announcements mark two opposite movements: Condor simplifies and upgrades, Lufthansa differentiates more. What this means for travelers is that anyone who books with Condor will be able to reliably carry a standard-sized cabin trolley plus a larger personal bag from 2026 onwards. At Lufthansa, taking a trolley suitcase in the cheapest segment will in future depend on the additional price. The message for the market is clear: Condor sets a counterpoint to the trend of new entry-level classes with fewer and fewer services for which you can and must book more and more.
