These are the six books you must read if you like The Devil Wears Prada

The premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 is around the corner, and along with it, the frenzy around fashion and outwardly lucrative work in the media is coming to life. Especially for millennials who grew up with movies and series starring successful and beautiful female editors. They knew everyone, influenced the world with their words and were constantly in the center of events.

If you can’t wait for this shiny world and you enjoy stories about strong (and maybe a little toxic) bosses or characters from the book and media business, we have great reading tips for you that will shorten your wait for the premiere.

Of course, you can start with the novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, based on which the first movie was made in 2006. However, you probably already know about it, so we do not mention it in the article.

We only selected books available in Czech or Slovak translation.

The main character Rebecca Bloomwood will remind you of journalist Carrie Bradshaw in many ways. However, Rebecca deals with finances at work, the greater paradox is that she manages them as irresponsibly as Carrie, and she cannot say no to a new pair from Jimmy Choo.

Unpaid bills and overdrawn credit cards are piling up, and although her apartment is full of designer pieces, instead of consolidating her finances, she doesn’t pay or lies to the banks. She meets the successful and attractive businessman Luke Brandon, of course, there will be a romantic line in such a novel.

You’ll probably find yourself throwing up your hands and shaking your head as you read, because no matter how hard Rebecca tries, if she doesn’t learn to say no to a luxury she can’t afford, it will probably ruin her. And who knows what that will do to her love life.

This book is available in Slovak and was also filmed under the name Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Caitlin Moran’s fast-paced and raw debut is about teenage Johanna, who decides to become someone else. After she survives an immense embarrassment, she changes her name, identity and demeanor, and starts working as an editor in a music magazine. On the surface, it looks more like a classic teenage crisis – alcohol, cigarettes, sex – but deep down, he is solving and searching for who he really is.

The identity change works great at first. “Dolly Wilde” will become a phenomenon in the music world. Her harsh reviews can destroy a music career overnight, she’s enjoying the 90s, writing with rock stars and going to parties, but with growing influence comes a painful realization.

Those closest to her stop recognizing her and her public appearance only discourages them from her.

In addition to this identity crisis, he faces the embarrassment of first loves and the pain of professional failures. How to Make a Girl is a hilarious and raw coming-of-age story, about being free to choose who we will be—and we can choose again and again—the freedom to choose who we want to be, and the courage it takes to start over.

The book is available in Czech translation.

In some books, female bosses will make you angry. In others, incompetent or overly ambitious assistants will annoy you. But in this novel you will be angry with absolutely everyone, and that is why you will devour it in a few hours. The main characters work in the lucrative book industry, but both have vastly different experiences with this business.

June Hayward and Athena Liu are writers and, to some extent, friends. While Athena is doing enormously well, June is stagnating in her career. When June witnesses Athena’s death, she steals the manuscript from her apartment: a masterful experimental novel about the underappreciated contribution of Chinese workers during the First World War.

With minor modifications, he sends it to his editor as his own. This starts a carousel of lies from which it is practically impossible to get out, and leads to increasingly bizarre plots and lies. Will the public find out that she didn’t actually write the book, but stole it? And how far can she go for fame?

You can also read the book in Slovak.

In this book, we follow the story of the editor-in-chief of the prestigious Glossy magazine. Her name is Imogen Tate and she is returning to work after half a year PN-ke. However, her former assistant Eva, a successful graduate of Harvard Business School, who has obviously settled there, is sitting behind her desk and is trying to blow her shit.

It is said that she turned an old-fashioned print magazine into an online magazine in which they discuss tweets, e-shops, apps and selfies. And Imogen suddenly doesn’t seem to fit into this world: the forty-year-old experienced editor-in-chief is day by day considered an outsider worthy of ridicule.

For free, she has immense experience and knows everyone who means something in fashion: Eva is determined to push her out of the magazine and prove to her that she has nothing to look for in this industry.

Imogen has only two options: give up or start fighting. You probably know where this is going.

Author Emily Henry has several world bestsellers to her credit. Her book People We Meet on Vacation was made into a film by Netflix, and the novel Summer Bet is also awaiting a film adaptation.

However, in the spirit of the story The Devil Wears Prada, we want to recommend another novel that is partly romantic and partly historical. Writer Alice Scott should experience her big break soon. Unless she’s thwarted by Hayden Anderson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who may blow her lucrative opportunity to write a biography of Margaret Ives, a reclusive heiress full of mysteries.

The initial rivalry is gradually overtaken by love as they are forced to uncover Margaret’s secrets together. With her trademark witty storytelling, Henry has created a story that explores themes of love, family secrets and self-esteem.

The book will be published in a Czech translation in June 2026.

Welcome back to New York, the capital of fashion and fast-paced work life. As the title suggests, the novel follows the lives of several women who are united by the little black dress.

Those at Bloomingdale’s department store (yes, that’s the one where Rachel from Friends worked) are ultimately the catalyst for major changes in the lives of a young aspiring actress, private detective or assistant trying to make it at work.

Each character faces a personal crossroads, from professional ambitions to romantic (mis)matches. This story is also perfectly illustrated by Miranda’s monologue about the inconspicuous blue sweater – even an ordinary piece of clothing can go a long way and change more than one life. If you need to relax, this book will make it easy for you.

The book is available in Czech translation.
