King Charles III. will travel to the US despite the Washington shooting
State visit of the British King Charles III. in the USA, despite Saturday’s shooting, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where US President Donald Trump was also present, will go ahead as planned, Buckingham Palace announced on Sunday evening.
The shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner happened less than 48 hours before the four-day visit of King Charles III. and Queen Camille in the US.
Buckingham Palace said on Sunday that the King was very relieved to hear that Trump and First Lady Melania were safe. They later stated that the king and queen were very grateful to everyone who acted quickly and were looking forward to the start of the visit, according to the French news agency AFP.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s chief of staff, Darren Jones, told Sky News that Britain and the US were working closely together to ensure an adequate security environment. He added that “His Majesty’s security is being given the utmost attention by the Government and the Palace”.
The royal couple will also be welcomed by President Trump and First Lady Melania. The king is expected to address both houses of the US Congress on Tuesday. Charles III. will be only the second British monarch to address US lawmakers in Congress. His mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, was the first to do so during a visit in 1991.
