A new extension to the Wurtemberg footbridge has officially opened to the public in a move aimed at improving pedestrian access between Monaco’s Salines car park and the Fontvieille district.
Operational since Thursday, April 23, the upgraded route now allows pedestrians leaving the Salines tunnel to access two newly installed lifts and a staircase directly from the footbridge. For the moment, the new facilities connect users to Place Wurtemberg, identified as level “PW” inside the lifts.
Authorities confirmed that a second phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of May, when the same lifts will also provide direct access to Avenue de Fontvieille, marked as level “AF”. The footbridge itself corresponds to level “PS”.
Until now, pedestrians moving through the area relied largely on lifts shared with the Wurtemberg parking structure, a layout often criticised for creating indirect and inconvenient routes. The new dedicated infrastructure is intended to ease congestion and create smoother connections between the Salines parking complex and Fontvieille.
The opening of the extension also marks the end of the temporary staircase installed at Place Wurtemberg, which is now being dismantled to allow further redevelopment works in the square to continue.
The project forms part of the Principality’s broader strategy to strengthen pedestrian mobility between districts, both for everyday travel and during periods of heavy visitor traffic.
