Vitelio Mejía, the president of Lidom, reiterates that the Caribbean Series will not be held here in 2028, which will be taken to the LoanDepot Park in Miami because the economic benefit is guaranteed there.
He explains that in 2022, the last time it was held in Santo Domingo, there was no economic benefit, and for this reason they do not want to return to such an experience.
This is quite contradictory, and I believe that baseball and the Dominican fans deserve that the event be held here every four years, as was the case before. And it should be that way because it all comes down to good level entertainment.
Why not look for an economic return so that it does make a profit? I believe that, being such a rich country (the country with the greatest tourist growth in the Caribbean area in the last 5 years), it could afford to present this event to strengthen our international positioning.
Vitellio says that this will not happen here until there is a new stadium, because then they will have a guarantee of presenting an economically positive event. I understand that hosting a tournament of this nature here will always be a risk because you never know which team will be the champion. It is not the same to have Águilas, Licey or Esído competing, clubs concentrated in the highest population centers, than to present a series with the rest of the league teams.
That is understandable, even in 2022 the Dominican representative was Gigantes del Cibao, and it was very good in terms of attendance and support. But they say they didn’t make any money.
It is possible that it will take a little while to get a new stadium, but Lidom must think that it would be very good for them to re-establish the Caribbean Series here before that, be it in Santo Domingo or Santiago, the two venues with the most economic power. It’s not always all about money.
What is the theme? That Lidom is imprisoned with the tremendous success of the last Caribbean Series held in Miami in 2024 – since more than 37 thousand fans attended the decisive game between Licey and La Guaira. (The Venezuelans were champions).
Vitelio says that this record of fans could not be surpassed even by the World Classic.
HOME RUN LEADERS:
Who are the major league home run leaders so far? There are many surprises. The time has elapsed, the batters have barely completed a little more than 60 at-bats, but some have started at full speed, as the saying goes. Let’s see.
.- In first place is outfielder Jordan Walker, of the St. Louis Cardinals, with a total of 8, something that not even he himself believes. Because? Last year Walker only shot 6, and his highest production was 23 in the 2023 season. It seems that his power is growing, he took special vitamins and a lot of gym in the winter and he presents himself as a new man. We’ll see how it goes when the month of May ends.
.- Brandon Lowe, new figure of the Pittsburgh Pirates playing second base. He has 7 home runs and his good start is surprising, although he hit 31 in 2025 playing for his longtime club, Tampa Bay. Lowe has quite a bit of power, as he had a 39 year in 2021.
.- Cuban Yordan Álvarez is 6, and it seems that he is back to good health. He had problems last season, hitting only 6 in 65 at-bats, but this is a man who, if he is healthy, can even reach 40. In 2024 he reached 37 home runs.
.- Gunnar Henderson, infielder for the Baltimore Orioles, also has 6 after finishing with only 17 last year. However, Henderson had 37 in 2024. (Here he is remembered as one of the men who hit one of two home runs in the United States’ victory over the Dominican Republic in the World Classic against Luis Severino.)
.- Aaron Judge has 6 (not including Tuesday’s game). The Yankees strongman is coming off a 53-homer performance last year, and his highest is 62 in 2022.
.- Kyle Schwarber, from Philadelphia, has 6, and is coming off a great performance in 2025 with 56, his lifetime best in that line.
STORY: In this Tuesday’s game, 3 Angels players hit consecutive home runs off Yankees left-hander Bryan Weathers after one out in the first inning. They were Mike Trout, JO Adell and Jorge Soler… And read this: on June 22, 2022, Minnesota’s first three men hit consecutive home runs off Gerrit Cole, which has happened for the only time in team history (Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa and Max Kepler). The Yankees ended up winning 10 to 7.
