The President of the United States describes the latest defense and security agreement with Greenland and Denmark as a real estate deal.
President of the United States, Donald Trump calls a recently concluded defense and security agreement between the US, Greenland and Denmark the biggest real estate deal ever.
This happens in a speech at a voter meeting in Dalton in the US state of Georgia.
– What do you think of the agreement I have made about Greenland? Got it for nothing.
– It is probably the largest real estate deal that has ever been concluded, says the US president.
Trump is visiting Georgia as part of the Republican campaign leading up to the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Trump has repeatedly said that the United States wants to gain control over and ownership of Greenland, which is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, as Greenland is, according to him, crucial for the security of the United States.
At the end of September, the USA, Greenland and Denmark entered into a new security and defense agreement regarding Greenland after lengthy negotiations.
It happened at a signing ceremony in the UN building in New York City, shortly after Donald Trump had given a speech at the UN General Assembly.
Among other things, the agreement allows the US to establish two new military bases in Greenland. Currently, the United States has one military base in Greenland, which is the Pituffik Space Base.
The agreement also opens the way for the establishment of the American missile defense system Golden Dome in Greenland. A system that, among other things, must protect against missiles and drones.
Trump is doing badly in the opinion polls, and the Democrats are significantly better than the Republicans to win the midterm elections – at least the House of Representatives.
It is more uncertain with the Senate. Currently, Trump’s Republicans hold majorities in both chambers.
At the voter meeting in Georgia, Trump also talks about the war in Iran and Venezuela.
Venezuela’s former president Nicolás Maduro was arrested in early January together with his wife by US special forces at their home in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.
Among other things, they are charged with helping to smuggle tons of cocaine into the United States and are currently awaiting trial in New York.
Trump has made no secret of the fact that, with the ouster of Maduro, he will give American companies access to Venezuela’s enormous oil reserves.
