Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq’s administration must reassess the matter of the establishment of a temporary hostel for women and prepare a new decision-making basis.
Due to full hostel in Nuuk, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has expanded capacity by setting up an emergency hostel for women in the former day care center Umiaq in Nuussuaq. The new women’s hostel has 16 places.
The temporary hostel was established by a so-called chairman’s decision, and the case has subsequently been processed by the municipality’s Committee for Economy and Business.
However, the committee chose to reject the administration’s proposal to approve that Umiaq must continue as a temporary hostel for the next three years and send the case back to the administration.
Mayor Avaaraq Olsen (IA) explains about the matter in a written comment to Sermitsiaq, that the recommendation was sent back to the administration because the Committee for Economy and Business assessed that a new calculation and clarification of the decision basis is needed.
The mayor emphasizes in this connection that the temporary hostel will continue while the case is reassessed:
– So it is not the need for a women’s hostel that has been rejected. The temporary women’s hostel has already been set up by the chairman’s decision to ensure vulnerable women in Nuuk a safe and gender-separated offer. It continues while the administration reassesses the case and prepares a new basis for decision-making, Avaaraq Olsen informs.
The mayor further explains that when a new proposal is ready, the matter must be dealt with politically again:
– For me, it is crucial that we find a sustainable solution for the women who need the offer, at the same time that the financial and administrative foundations are in place, says Avaaraq Olsen.
