The Suila scandal grows: The debt rises to DKK 39.8 million

7,521 citizens will not have to pay back to the national treasury after Naalakkersuisut has decided to forgive the entire debt for 2025. The total debt has increased by DKK 7.9 million since the previous calculation. Naalakkersuisoq for finance Aqqaluaq B. Egede (IA) has hired the Greenland Audit Office to help find the errors.

    – The error in the first annual statement and the excessive payments in the income year 2025 have led to many complaints from citizens. It is understandable because the errors have contributed to weakening citizens’ trust in the system, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.

The total debt for citizens who have been paid too much in Suila tapit in 2025, is now calculated at DKK 39.8 million.

This appears from a written reply from the naalakkersuisoq for finance, Aqqaluaq B. Egede, to Sermitsiaq.

The previous calculation was DKK 31.9 million. This means that the debt has increased by DKK 7.9 million.

However, Aqqaluaq B. Egede does not explain why the amount has increased. He also does not state how the almost 40 million DKK must be financed when the debt is forgiven.

As previously reported, Naalakkersuisut has decided to forgive the entire debt for 2025. The decision was announced on Saturday 10 October, the same day as a demonstration against the handling of the Suila tapit case was planned.

However, the demonstration was canceled after naalakkersuisoq announced that the citizens will not pay their debts. The announcement came just an hour before the scheduled start time.

The remission takes place on the basis of a number of errors in the annual statements and excessive payments of Suila-tapit during the year.

Naalakkersuisut will give up claims to repay Suila tapit

Naalakkersuisut will now carry out an overall evaluation of the Suila tapit system to find the causes of the failures and avoid similar problems in the future.

    – We do this evaluation, among other things. with the assistance of accountants from Greenland’s Audit Office, who have been hired to help find errors and process the complaints that have been made to the Tax Agency, writes Aqqaluaq B. Egede.

The evaluation must both uncover the technical and organizational conditions behind the Suila carpet system.

However, there is still no timetable for when the evaluation will be completed. According to Aqqaluaq B. Egede, the work depends, among other things, on the supplier who has developed the IT system behind the Suila carpet.

At the same time, Naalakkersuisut is working to make the preliminary payments more accurate from 2026. Aqqaluaq B. Egede emphasizes, however, that payments that are too high or too low may also occur in the future, as the system depends on correct reports from both citizens and employers.

    Will not abolish Suila carpet

At the same time, Aqqaluaq B. Egede emphasizes that Naalakkersuisut cannot simply abolish the Suila carpet.

The deduction is laid down in the Income Tax Act, and an abolition will therefore require that Inatsisartut be involved first.

    – Suila tapit is a monthly deduction which is set out in the Income Tax Act. Naalakkersuisut cannot therefore simply decide to cancel this without first involving Inatsisartut. If you remove this deduction, it is equivalent to imposing a simultaneous tax increase on the citizens, which will especially affect the low and middle income groups in employment.

    – It is therefore important that we think carefully and not rush the decisions. We must not correct a mistake by making a new mistake, writes Aqqaluaq B. Egede in his reply to Sermitsiaq.
