Updated:
President Abelardo de la Espriella announced this Thursday that the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge will change its name and will be called the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.
During a broadcast from the portfolio, the president questioned the name adopted in 2023, considering that culture should be understood as a set that encompasses the artistic, historical, intellectual and heritage manifestations of Colombia. Also stated that cultural institutions should not be used to promote political ideologies.
The president presented as one of his main objectives a “cultural counterrevolution”, with which he intends to confront what he described as the influence of the extreme left and the wokism in cultural and academic fields. According to him, his Government will defend traditional values, national identity and an interpretation of history that, in his opinion, is not influenced by ideological interests.

Among the first guidelines, the president ordered the minister to remove from public spaces representations that he considers an exaltation of terrorism, and expressly mentioned Carlos Pizarro. He also noted that his Government will give special attention to the conservation of religious heritage, including churches, convents, ecclesiastical archives, sacred art and manifestations such as processions.
The president also maintained that the portfolio should focus on the protection of heritage and the fulfillment of its missionary functions, and not become a space for political favors or corruption.
