On October 10 we celebrate Maroon Day. On this special day we reflect on the rich history, strength, resilience and valuable contribution of the Maroon community to the development of Suriname. It is a day to remember our ancestors, acknowledge our history and look to the future with respect and confidence.
The VHP emphasizes the importance of solidarity, mutual respect and national solidarity. Suriname’s strength lies in the diversity of its population and in our ability, despite differences, to jointly build a peaceful, just and prosperous society. For the Progressive Reform Party (VHP), this day is more than a moment of commemoration.
“Good schools, accessible healthcare, infrastructure, employment, entrepreneurship and prospects for young people are not favors, but conditions for a just society”
The history of the Maroons is a history of courage and determination. Our ancestors fought for freedom, dignity and the preservation of their own identity under extremely difficult circumstances. They built communities in which solidarity, mutual responsibility and respect for traditions were central.
That history deserves lasting recognition. Not just on October 10, but every day. Maroon culture is an essential part of Surinamese national heritage. The languages, music, dance, art, traditions and lifestyles of the various Maroon communities have enriched Suriname and contribute to the unique character of our society.
The VHP does not see diversity as a threat, but as our strength. Suriname was built by people with different backgrounds. That is precisely why we must continue to work towards a society in which every Surinamese feels recognized, respected and a full part of the nation. National unity does not mean erasing our differences. On the contrary: we must respect our differences and at the same time realize what connects us.
Bromtji Djari’s idea, living together, respecting each other and bearing shared responsibility, remains of great importance. Fraternization should not be an empty political slogan. It must become visible in policy and in concrete opportunities for every citizen. This also means that the development of the interior and the Maroon communities deserves our continued attention.
Good schools, accessible healthcare, infrastructure, employment, entrepreneurship and prospects for young people are not favors, but conditions for a just society. On this Day of the Maroons, the VHP expresses its appreciation for the Maroon communities and for their important contribution to Suriname.
Let us honor the courage of our ancestors by taking responsibility for the future together. Let us bridge differences, reject polarization and continue to build one Suriname in which there is room for everyone. The VHP wishes the entire Maroon community in Suriname and beyond a dignified, meaningful and blessed Day of the Maroons. One people, one nation. Strong together, Suriname stronger!
