It is necessary to strengthen resilience step-by-step, starting from individual households up to the national level as a national duty, said Vice-President U Nyo Saw at the ceremony to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2026.
The commemorative ceremony took place at Jade Hall of the Myanmar International Convention Centre I (MICC I) in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
In his remarks, the Vice-President noted that the theme of the 2026 International Day, “Resilience Starts at Home” pushes all people globally to initiate the construction of buildings with resilience to disaster risks and societies in responding to disasters, making preparations and emphasizing rehabilitation.
He highlighted that, as Myanmar is a country highly vulnerable to natural disasters, it is placing great emphasis on pre-disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction activities in accordance with the Sendai Framework (2015-2030) and the Disaster Management Law (2013). Furthermore, in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts following the 2025 Mandalay earthquake, priority has been given to the ‘Build Back Better’ principle, and the Myanmar National Building Code 2025 is being drafted and implemented to ensure the construction of earthquake-resilient buildings.
The Vice-President underlined that, as capability and inclusive participation are vital factors in building disaster resilience, it is necessary to strengthen resilience step-by-step starting from individual households up to the national level as a national duty.
The Vice-President awarded winners in the open article contest, basic education high school level painting contest and animation video contest.
Union ministers also presented prizes to winners in the pamphlet design contests and basic education high school level painting contest while video clips on the message sent by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the endeavours on disaster management were screened. — MNA/TTA
