The Secretary of State for Education and Universities, Josep Anton Bardinarecognizes that the ministry has difficulty covering certain teaching positions, especially Catalan and French. In an interview, he explains that the teacher exchange has 37 people, but that some positions remain without a candidate because those registered do not have the required profile. The situation contrasts with that of mathematics, a specialty in which there are five professionals available without a vacant position.
bardina assures that the 2026-2027 academic year has begun without notable incidents and highlights the consolidation of teaching positions. The Government expected to stabilize at 75 during the legislature, but estimates it will end up at between 83 and 85.
“Education never stops, education is continuous. The system must be adapted to new challenges”
As for the students, the secretary of state relativizes the initial decline, located between 2% and 2.5%. If compared to the end of the previous academic year, the reduction drops to 1.7% or 1.8%. The ministry will study the causes of this evolution, marked by the low birth rate and migratory movements. While kindergarten classrooms register less pressure, other educational levels receive more newly arrived students.
Another challenge is the use of technology. After the withdrawal of the iPads, Bardina defense limit screens at certain ages without giving up digital resources. The ministerial plan includes more than thirty actions and foresees guidelines for restricting access to social networks and artificial intelligence among the younger students. It also aims to strengthen reading and writing and mathematics.
In the university field, it claims the moratorium applied to new private institutions and the future higher education law to preserve academic quality.
Finally, place thevocational school among the ministry’s priority projects. The center should offer training to both young people and workers who want to reorient their career path. At the same time, theProfessional Training Observatorycreated in June, will make it possible to study the needs of the labor market and promote new qualifications. bardina also proposes moving the specialties linked to mountain sports to theEFPEM to turn this center into a training benchmark. The secretary of state advocates revising curricula and assessment systems to improve academic outcomes. “Education never stops, education is continuous”, he says bardinawhich considers it essential to “constantly adapt the system to new challenges”.
