The Division of Agriculture, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has launched a 20-week Farmer Field School programme aimed at equipping young people with practical agricultural skills and entrepreneurial knowledge.
The initiative officially commenced on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Dominica–China Agricultural Science Complex, with 15 members of the National Association of Youth in Agriculture (NAYA) from the North Agricultural Region participating in the training.
The programme will provide participants with hands-on instruction in sustainable vegetable production, including greenhouse and open-field
farming, hydroponics, crop management, and good agricultural practices.
It will also introduce agricultural entrepreneurship, helping participants explore ways to transform their farming knowledge into viable business ventures. The training is being delivered by extension officers from the Division of Agriculture, in collaboration with the IOM, farmer Jeffrey Bruney of Kubuli Farms, and the Chinese Agricultural Technical Mission.
Beyond developing technical expertise, the Farmer Field School is intended to encourage young people to view agriculture as a pathway
to employment, business development, and sustainable livelihoods.
Through practical learning and exposure to innovative farming methods, the initiative seeks to strengthen the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs while contributing to the development of Dominica’s agricultural sector.
The programme embraces the principles of learning, growth, innovation, and enterprise as participants begin their journey towards greater involvement in agriculture.
