In a move aimed at developing the arbitration system in continental competitions

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology starting from the group stage in the African Champions League and Confederation Cup tournaments, starting from the current season, in a step aimed at developing the arbitration system in continental competitions.
Samson Adamu, Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football, revealed the decision during a press conference, stressing CAF’s approach towards enhancing the use of modern technologies to ensure the greatest degree of refereeing justice during matches.
The decision represents a change in the mechanism of using video technology in African championships, after its application was limited to the advanced knockout rounds, starting with the quarter-finals, according to the previous system.
It is expected that the application of technology since the group stage will contribute to giving the participating teams a greater opportunity to benefit from reviewing influential arbitration cases, and reducing errors that may affect the results of the matches.
The current season’s competitions witness the participation of four clubs in the continental championships, Mouloudia Algiers and Chabab Al Saoura in the African Champions League, the latter eliminated in the preliminary round, while USM Algiers and CS Belouizdad participate in the African Confederation Cup.
