Three young women sat in a parked car in Nuussuaq looking at their phones. Then two shots rang out. The window shattered and the woman behind the wheel saw blood on her friend.
– She kept saying, hurry up and drive away, quickly, explained the woman who was behind the wheel on Tuesday in Sermersooq District Court.
All three women have just testified in the current trial in Nuuk, where a 19-year-old man is accused of a number of crimes, and prosecutors want a custodial sentence.
The episode from the parking lot at Akiki in Nuussuaq took place on the night of June 27, 2025, and it has led to an indictment against the young man for attempted double murder.
The young man pleads not guilty, but admits to having fired shots at the car where the three women were staying. He was 17 years old at the time.
The driver of the car further explained:
– I tried to save myself and couldn’t see who it was. I tried to back up to escape.
The woman in the passenger seat knew the defendant. She and the defendant had had a disagreement earlier that evening or night. She remembers the incident in the parking lot:
Disagreements prior to shooting incident
– We were sitting in the car and looking at our phones when two people came up. They both had shotguns, but only (the witness mentions the defendant’s name) fired. The other aimed but did not fire, the witness said.
The police have tried to find the other person who, according to the witness, was present in the parking lot. But it has not been successful, prosecutors say.
The shots came from the right side of the car. The hail shattered the car window and continued into the car.
Both women in the front seats were hit by hail in the face, chest and arm. One was also hit in the face by shards of glass from the broken window. This shows documentation from the subsequent treatment. The hail also destroyed the window on the left side.
The third young woman who was sitting in the back seat was not hit, and the young man is not charged with attempted murder against her. She had also noticed two men outside the car, but only one had a gun, according to her statement.
Permanent injury
All three women say that the violent incident has affected them afterwards. The two who were physically hit still have hail in their bodies.
It is still an open question what motive the 19-year-old had for shooting. He maintains on Tuesday that the intention was to scare, not to kill anyone.
– It was never my intention that I should hit them, he said through tears.
The trial continues on Tuesday afternoon to shed light on personal matters. Then come the closing remarks from the prosecutor, defense attorney and the young man himself, if he wishes. The verdict is expected on Wednesday.
