Andy Burnham and Jonas Gahr Støre support a new agreement between Greenland, the USA and Denmark.
Prime Minister of Great BritainAndy Burnham, and Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, welcome the agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the USA.
This is stated by the British Prime Minister’s Office according to the news agency Reuters.
Burnham and Støre met on Sunday in Liverpool, where the British governing party Labor is holding a party conference.
On Tuesday, Denmark, Greenland and the USA entered into a new agreement on the USA’s relationship with Greenland.
The agreement is an amendment and expansion of the defense agreement from 1951 between the three parties.
At the same time, it confirms the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark over Greenland and recognizes the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
Among other things, the US gets permission to create new defense areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig and to expand Pituffik Space Base, formerly called Thulebase.
Any other future locations require approval from Denmark and Greenland.
The agreement also opens the way for the establishment of the American missile defense system Golden Dome in Greenland.
At the same time, investments from countries outside the EU and NATO in sensitive sectors in Greenland are limited.
The agreement has no fixed end date and, after signing, must first be approved by the Greenlandic parliament, Inatsisartut, and the Danish Parliament.
Burnham and Støre also discussed the defense agreement between Great Britain and Norway, the Lunna House agreement, on Sunday. This is stated in the announcement from the British Prime Minister’s Office.
The Lunna House Agreement is a defense agreement between the UK and Norway which was concluded at the end of 2025.
According to the Norwegian news agency NTB, it was the first meeting between Støre and Burnham.
Støre tells NTB that the meeting was a good experience and that he is looking forward to working with Burnham.
He goes on to say that both defense cooperation and artificial intelligence were on Sunday’s agenda.
