Havana/A woman identified as Nilda died and several people were injured in a gun attack that occurred this Friday in La Mercedita, a town in the Matanzas municipality of Cárdenas. The testimonies released from the scene point to Maikel Hernández, known as The Curritoformer partner of one of the attacked women.
The first reports began to circulate on social networks through the cardenense communicator Christian Arbolaez, a few hours after the event. This and other reports They agreed that the man had come to the place armed to confront his ex-partner, Yaima Albelo. Nilda, her mother, intervened during the attack and received several shots that caused her death, according to the information released.
This Sunday, the Nio platform Reporting A Crime released a photograph of Nilda and new testimonies that allow us to partially reconstruct what happened. The woman was Hernández’s former mother-in-law, who had had a romantic relationship with Albelo.
During the relationship there had been episodes of violence against the woman and also against her eldest daughter.
Nilda’s identification has also been supported by people around her in the comments to publications about the case. “She was like a mother to me,” Sandy Robaina wrote. Another close friend, Leidy Rodríguez, said she was “devastated” by the news and described Nilda as part of her family and as a “good person.”
According to a source close to those affected cited by the platform, Albelo had moved to live with his parents and children after breaking up with Hernández. The same testimony assures that during the relationship there had been episodes of violence against the woman and also against her eldest daughter.
In addition to Nilda, several people were reportedly injured during the attack. Among them is Yaima Albelo herself, who, according to the information disclosed by the communicator Niover Licea, suffered serious injuries and would have three fractures in the skull. Until this Sunday, an official medical report on his condition had not been released.
Mayari Hernández, eldest daughter of the alleged aggressor, was also injured. According to the same source, he received a shot that was not fatal, but presented complications.
With the death of Nilda, ’14ymedio’ raises to 53 the number of femicides recorded in Cuba so far in 2026
Another of the injured was identified only as Yaniel, Mayari’s partner. Testimonies maintain that he was shot when he tried to intervene during the attack. The most recent data indicate that Hernández would have subsequently surrendered to the authorities.
There is still no public confirmation from the Ministry of the Interior. Nor have the Matanzas authorities released, so far, information about the condition of the injured people or the circumstances under which Hernández obtained the weapon used in the attack.
The case once again raises alarm about violence against women in Cuba and about the difficulties in obtaining official information about these events. On numerous occasions, it is family members, neighbors and independent platforms who reveal the identities of the victims and reconstruct the facts before state institutions speak out, if they do so.
With the death of Nilda, 14ymedio brings to 53 the number of femicides recorded in Cuba so far in 2026. The previous case recorded by this newspaper was that of Idania Castillo Sacre58 years old, murdered on September 26 in San Cristóbal, Artemisa, by her ex-partner, a man who had already served prison for killing the mother of his children in 2010.
