Democrats on the Senate and House foreign affairs committees have formally asked the State Department to launch an investigation into the conduct of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece.
This reaction follows an investigation published by the Wall Street Journal, which revealed her efforts to promote a Greek company’s gas deals across Southeast Europe.
In a letter launched Thursday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed deep concern about what she called Guilfoyle’s “inappropriate use of official position.”
According to concerns raised by lawmakers, the ambassador allegedly involved a registered lobbyist in official meetings with foreign officials, lobbying for one of his Greek clients and the latter’s joint venture with a Greek state-backed company.
In addition to her dubious connections with lobbyists, her frequent trips with private planes have also come under criticism, which has raised big questions about the ethics and transparency of her diplomatic function.
