Miami/The manger dogone of Lope de Vega’s great comedies, comes to Miami in a version by the Cuban poet, playwright and critic Norge Espinosa Mendoza, under the direction of Carlos Díaz, founder of Teatro El Público. The production, by FUNDarte and Teatro El Público, is presented as part of the Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home series, in collaboration with the City of Aventura.
The work preserves as its axis the jealousy of Diana, Countess of Belflor, when she discovers that Teodoro, her secretary, is in love with Marcela, one of her ladies. The aristocrat, who until then has rejected her suitors and jealously defended her independence, begins to interfere in the relationship and unleashes a game of intrigues, desires, appearances and class differences. Espinosa’s adaptation focuses on contemporary concerns and plays with half-truths, fictions and power relations, while Díaz proposes stripping the text to put the characters in the foreground and offer an ironic reading of its apparent happy ending.
The cast is led by Ysmercy Salomón, as Diana; Enmanuel Galbán, as Teodoro, and Laura Alemán, as Marcela. The cast is completed by Guillermo Lavandera (Dorotea and Ricardo), Frank Ledesma (Anarda and Federico), Luciano Cortés (Tristán), Reinier Díaz (Fabio) and Joel Sotolongo (Ludovico). The production has costume design by Celia Ledón, lighting by Manuel De Durán, choreography and stage movement by Abel Berenguer and sound design and countertenor voice by Frank Ledesma.
The laying lasts approximately 100 minutes. The production was presented in July at the Clásicos Festival in Alcalá, in Spain, before this Miami season.
