One more touch of HartA tribute to the dog behind the mission

    The Analyst by The Analyst
    October 2, 2026
    in Trinidad and Tobago

The last time I wrote about Hart, I ended with a sentence I thought was hopeful: “Blindness didn’t end his mission. It just gave him a new one.” I never imagined that I would one day have to write about the end of that mission.

Hart was euthanised on Republic Day, and even now, that sentence feels strange to write. Hart was one of those dogs who seemed almost too full of life to imagine without it. There were always balls to chase, things to investigate, people to greet and, from everything I had heard, other dogs who occasionally needed to be reminded that Hart was still Hart.

I first wrote about him because his story was impossible to ignore. Here was this Belgian Malinois who came to Trinidad and spent years working with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Canine Branch, detecting drugs, guns and ammunition. Then he began losing his sight.

By the time I wrote about him, he was also dealing with glaucoma and kidney disease and needed regular medication and eye drops. For a working dog whose world had been built around his senses, his health problems could easily have marked the end of his story.

Instead, Hart retired from police work, went home with Debbie Jacob and found himself with a very different life.

He became the first animal member of the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association and our official mascot. He became a teaching dog for veterinary students learning about blindness in animals and the subject of A Touch of Hart, sharing his adventures with people who probably never expected a blind former police dog to become something of a local celebrity. He showed people that losing one ability doesn’t mean losing your whole life, and he did it simply by continuing to be Hart.

There was Blu, too. Hart’s companion, the gentle German Shepherd who seemed to understand him in ways the rest of us could only marvel at. She would redirect his balls toward him, run alongside him and gather his toys so they could stay close to him while he slept.

Hart, in turn, would use his nose to map her face and head, learning her shape through touch because he couldn’t see her. I thought that was beautiful when I wrote about it the first time. Knowing that Hart is gone makes it feel even more precious.

I got to meet him after I wrote that first article, and that changed the way I thought about his story. It’s one thing to hear about a blind police dog who found a new life. It’s another thing to sit beside him, hold his leash, play with him and brush him while he happily went about his business. In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about Hart as a symbol of resilience or disability advocacy. I was just playing with a dog who was having a good time.

There was nothing particularly tragic about Hart then. He wasn’t a sad little blind dog being carefully handled by everyone around him. He was simply Hart, enjoying himself and apparently having no intention of letting blindness interfere with that.

Before I left, he put his head in my lap.

I still don’t know why he did it. Maybe he was tired. Maybe he liked me. Maybe my lap happened to be there and Hart decided it was an acceptable place to rest his head. Dogs don’t always give us explanations for the things they do. Sometimes they simply trust us with a moment and leave us to decide what it means.

I’ve thought about that moment since I heard that Hart was gone. When I remember him now, I don’t first think about the police dog or the mascot of the Blind Welfare Association. I think about the weight of his head in my lap, the leash in my hand and the feel of his fur beneath my fingers. I think about how easily he let me into his world for a little while, and how strange it is that a dog I knew for such a short time could leave such a lasting impression.

That’s the funny thing about animals. They don’t need years to become part of our memories. Sometimes a few hours is enough. Sometimes its a particular sound, a silly habit or, in my case, a dog’s head resting quietly in my lap just before I said goodbye without knowing I was saying goodbye for the last time.

For Debbie, carrying on without him will be something else entirely. There are the routines that suddenly stop, the familiar sounds that are no longer there, the empty spaces around the house and all the small things that nobody else notices because they belonged specifically to Hart. You aren’t just saying goodbye to a pet. You’re saying goodbye to a presence that had quietly become part of the shape of your everyday life.

I think about Blu, too. She was part of Hart’s world in a way most of us could never be. I hope she remembers him in the simplest ways: his smell, his presence, the sounds he made around the house and the companionship they shared. Their relationship was one of the sweetest parts of Hart’s story.

The first time I wrote about Hart, I said that blindness hadn’t ended his mission; it had simply given him a new one. Looking back now, I think what mattered was that Hart kept finding ways to connect with people, enjoy the things he loved and be completely, stubbornly himself. Somewhere along the way, he became part of the lives of people who were lucky enough to meet him.

There’s something quietly fitting about Hart leaving us on Republic Day. He spent much of his life serving Trinidad and Tobago, first as a police dog and later in a completely different kind of service. He protected people, taught people, challenged assumptions about blindness and brought joy to people who might otherwise never have known his story.

So goodbye, Hart. I hope wherever you are, there are endless fields, an unreasonable number of squeaky balls and absolutely nobody telling you that you’ve had enough. Thank you for letting me play with you, for trusting me with your leash and, most of all, for putting your head in my lap before I left. I didn’t know then that it would become one of the memories I would keep of you, but I’m very glad I have it.

You were a good dog, Hart. A troublesome one, probably. A bossy one, definitely. But a good dog, and one whose story mattered far beyond the years he spent on this earth.

The mission is over now, sweet boy, but the story isn’t.
