PARAMARIBO — President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons sworn in fifteen lawyers as deputy members of the Court of Justice at the presidential palace on Monday (today). Their appointment is the formal step before the new members take up their duties as judges within the Court of Justice.
The appointed lawyers are Negesty Winter, Genaro Alpin, Cherida Tamsiran-Harris, Maytrie Behari, Grasila Sitaram, Shusant Mohan, Latoya Rozenblad, Stéphanie Doelbakir-Kent, Charisma Voorburg-Blank, Kajal Tahdil, Olton Helstone, Vanessa Akaamba, Anushka Bajnath, Julio Amatoemar and Nathaly Amatkarijo. The fifteen lawyers completed their training as Judicial Officer in Training (Raio) earlier this year. Minister Harish Monorath of Justice and Security presented them with their certificates in June.

The deputy members are immediately included in the judiciary’s division of labor for the new parliamentary year, which starts in October. During the annual meeting of the judiciary in July, their efforts were already taken into account in the hearing schedules.
The expansion comes against the backdrop of a shortage of judges. The judiciary has previously indicated that the available capacity is under pressure and that reinforcement is needed to further support the judiciary. Monorath therefore called the expansion positive. According to the minister, the arrival of the new members means a strengthening of the judiciary and provides additional capacity for the judiciary. The total number of judges in the country is now 45.
