Four probationary police officers have recently been dismissed following an investigation, Dominica’s chief of police confirmed at a Ministry of National Security and Legal Affairs press conference.
Chief of Police Lincoln Corbette said one of the dismissed officers had not been charged with a criminal offence. His conduct and language nevertheless raised concerns serious enough to warrant dismissal while he was still on probation, the chief said. He did not name the officer or provide the allegations in full.
He explained that newly recruited officers normally serve a two-year probationary period, which may be extended.
During that period, an officer whose character or fitness is found wanting can be dismissed after receiving notice of the concerns and an opportunity to respond.
The chief said the affected officers were given time to reply; one was granted an extension.
Another officer connected to the matter has completed probation and remains subject to a different process, he said. That officer’s criminal case would take precedence, with disciplinary proceedings available under the applicable procedures.
The chief did not provide a complete account of the underlying investigation or identify which officers face criminal charges. His answers made clear that dismissal from the force and criminal prosecution are separate decisions.
