The United States Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago says T&T has taken a major step in strengthening regional cooperation against narco-terrorism by joining the United States in designating 25 criminal organisations as foreign terrorist organisations.
In a post on its social media pages yesterday, the embassy said Trinidad and Tobago was the first Shield of the Americas country to join the United States in making the designations.
Trinidad and Tobago joined the Shield of the Americas at the initiative’s inaugural summit in Doral, Florida, on March 7, 2026, where Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was among the regional leaders invited by US President Donald Trump.
“The United States and Trinidad and Tobago are advancing our shared mission to confront narco-terrorism and protect our communities,” the embassy said.
The post also shared comments from Juan Pablo Segura, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, who commended Trinidad and Tobago for the move.
“Another major step forward for the Shield of the Americas! We commend Trinidad and Tobago for being the first Shield of the Americas nation to join the United States in designating 25 criminal organisations as foreign terrorist organisations,” Segura said.
He said the move significantly advances the two countries’ “shared mission to confront the scourge of narco-terrorism poisoning our communities.”
