Dominica’s Kalinago heritage will take centre stage from September 11 to 19 as the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment partners with the Kalinago Council for Kalinago Week 2026.
A Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) press release said that the week-long observance will highlight the culture, traditions and everyday life of the Kalinago, Dominica’s Indigenous people.
The programme will be officially introduced during a media launch on Friday, September 11, at 10:00 AM at the Kalinago Barana Aute. The launch will feature Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment Cozier Frederick, Kalinago Chief Anette Sanford and Kalinago Development Officer Alice Charles.
Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and other partner agencies are also expected to attend.
An important part of Dominica’s national identity and its tourism offering, the Kalinago community is located along the island’s rugged northeastern coast and allows residents and visitors to experience the community’s heritage firsthand, including its history, language, food, craft and way of life.
During Kalinago Week, the Ministry of Tourism and the DDA will use their Discover Dominica platforms to promote the scheduled activities and share material highlighting Kalinago culture and heritage.
Residents and visitors are being encouraged to join in the activities throughout the week and experience an important part of Dominica’s Indigenous heritage from September 11 through 19.
