Arab League strongly condemns Nauru’s embassy opening in occupied Jerusalem
Cairo, Sept. 8 (Petra) — The Arab League strongly condemned on
Tuesday the Republic of Nauru’s opening of an embassy in the occupied
city of Jerusalem, describing the move as an explicit violation of
international law and relevant international resolutions, as well as
an attempt to consolidate the illegal status quo imposed by the
Israeli occupation.
In an official statement, the Cairo-based organization emphasized
that Nauru’s step contradicts the firm international stance regarding
the legal and historical status of Jerusalem. The statement
specifically cited UN Security Council resolutions, including
Resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980, which explicitly refuse to recognize
actions taken by Israeli authorities to alter the character and legal
status of the holy city.
The Arab League stressed that opening an embassy in occupied
Jerusalem does not alter the city’s legal status, create any rights
or legal standing for the occupation, or prejudice the inalienable
rights of the Palestinian people chief among them the right to
establish an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders with
East Jerusalem as its capital.
The regional bloc reiterated that East Jerusalem remains an integral
part of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. It added that
any measures or practices aimed at altering the city’s character,
legal status, or demographic composition are null and void and cannot
establish a new legal reality.
