Dominica Labour Party candidate Ashma McDougall is being projected as the winner of the Roseau North by-election, following Monday’s vote in the constituency.
McDougall faced United Workers Party candidate Daniel “Danny” Lugay and independent candidate Sherman Boston in the three-way contest.
The projection is based on preliminary figures announced by Chief Election Officer Anthea Joseph.
However, the result has not yet been formally declared.
The Roseau North contest attracted considerable attention, with the three candidates campaigning across the constituency in the weeks leading up to polling day.
McDougall, the DLP candidate, highlighted community development issues during the campaign, including improvements to footpaths, drainage, sanitation, community facilities and housing. Lugay, who contested the seat for the UWP, also made healthcare, economic development and waste management key issues, while Boston campaigned as an independent candidate with an emphasis on unity and community development.
The by-election was triggered by the departure of former Roseau North representative Miriam Blanchard, with voters going to the polls on September 7 to select her successor.
